We have a total of 15 counter surfaces. One is tile and it has been done for a month. One is butcher block and should be done in a couple of weeks. One is wood and is part of the entertainment center cabinet and it is also done. Today we received five of the granite counter tops and they were installed. The surpass our expectations. Tomorrow a few ore will be installed along with a two more cabinet installations.
Today the remaining cabinets arrived. More photos tomorrow but they look great. These photos are of the two master bathroom vanities. The opening in the front will be covered by a false front.
The back is still progressing nicely. I took an hour to shovel the snow away from the tapered columns just in case the stone guys decided to start working on them but we still have to wait a couple of days more
The front is almost done and the back is moving nicely. Today they ran out of stone and are waiting for another delivery. Apparently we are using quite a bit!
The floors are going in quickly. The installation process for eight inch wide planks is a little bit different from the standard 2" to 3" planks. With the narrow planks the boards are tongue and groove and they are stapled to the sub floor with very heavy duty staples from and air hammer. There is a big staple every few inches along the female side of the board. With wide boards a staple is not enough to hold the plank down under normal expansions and contractions throughout the seasonal changes in temperature and moisture. For wide boards they actually use a glue along with the staples. Here are some photos of the process.
The tile work is done except for the master bathroom and shower. The floor is going in now and the shower walls are growing. Because we will have a steam shower we had to use ceramic tile instead of natural stone. The walls have a waterproof membrane and two coats of mortar applied before the tile work starts to ensure there are no water leaks.
Here are some shots of our wood trimmings. The floor is "breathing" to acclimatize to its' new home. If the moisture content of the wood floor and the house are too far apart then the floor will expand/shrink after installation and never line up correctly.
We are building our dream home in the mountains of Utah where we can hit the slopes or the golf course as quickly as possible. Check back for updates on transforming a piece of dirt with great views into the house of our dreams.
